302 and Transmission Question
Alright, so I'm wanting to rebuild a 302 with some friends and put it in my car.
My car is a 1993 LX, 4-cylinder, with a 5-speed manual transmission.
A friend of mine isn't sure whether or not I will need a new transmission with a 302,
would any of you happen to know if I will or not?
Thanks!!

technicaly no. The input shaft on a 4cyl trans is smaller then a 8cyl, that can be fixed by getting a pilot bearing for the 4cyl trans though. However the strength of said trans is not the same and won't hold up long, also the gears are different ratio. However that said sure you could use it.
Grinding is usually the first symptoms. We just did 3500.00 worth of work to an old 85 pos for this kid who wouldn't listen. He bolted a 4cyl trans up to his 302 and blew it up. Instead of getting a new t5 he wanted us to rebuild this one. the whole 3500 was not just trans related mind you but he'll be back again with another busted trans I am certain.
my brother had to put a 4cyl trans in his 5.0 one time and it lasted about a week or so. he was cruisin at low rpm and the tranny grenaded 3rd gear and busted the housing. i believe the 4 cyl tranny is only supposed to handle about 150 to 200 ft lbs of torque if that. not very much at all. i would only do it just to move it around and to make sure things work but for fun purposes i wouldnt try it. unless you want to try to blow the tanny and see how much damage you can do lol.
