i have an 87 mustang coupe and when your driving you can move the steering wheel at least a quater turn each way before the car actually turns. im thinking its tie rods but i wanted to get some other opinoins on this.

 

Your front end may be worn out, check all the bushings and rod ends, I am not sure if the steering can be tightened up or not.
