If you're just looking for an OBDII scanner, you can get them for fairly cheap at walmart. For something like that, i don't see a need to spend a lot of money on a fancy setup. Others may disagree with me, but that's the cheapers route and it works.

My method is even cheaper... go to Autozone and have them scan it for free... Well, that used to be the method before I bought a tuner but that does a lot more than just read error codes.

Just go to any auto parts store and buy a OBD2 scaner. If your friend is a mechanic seems like he would be aware of these.
Are you talking about the scanner to read codes or the one to reflash the ECM?

All 96 and up carshave what is called a OBD 2 port. Any OBD2 Scanner can plug into these ports and read the codes.
Actron is a popular brand

Well if your buddy want's to open a business as a mechanic he's probably gonna need a whole diagnostics cart not just a cheap handheld scanner
