looking for a scanner
If you're just looking for an OBDII scanner, you can get them for fairly cheap at walmart. For something like that, i don't see a need to spend a lot of money on a fancy setup. Others may disagree with me, but that's the cheapers route and it works.
My method is even cheaper... go to Autozone and have them scan it for free...
Well, that used to be the method before I bought a tuner but that does a lot more than just read error codes.

Just go to any auto parts store and buy a OBD2 scaner. If your friend is a mechanic seems like he would be aware of these.
