a few things, MORONS the screen is there for a ****ing reason, leave it there, you lose hp by taking it out, how in the world do you think a maf reads air flow???? RESTRICTION!!!!!! the more air going through the higher the restriction, and it increases fuel. and don't **** with your timing, you have no idea how stupid that is, the computer will adjust timing for optimum efficiency(hp) up to 100 times a second, fuel always burns at the same rate, timing needs to be advanced by the computer or your just screwing your whole car up
I should change my name to "bullsh!t detector"....

1. The maf screen isn't there to read airflow, its purpose is to smooth the flow of air across the mass air sensor wire and to ensure that air is flowing equally throughout the sampling tube. As long as your not using an aftermarket CAI that has a fenderwell bend, you "should" be ok - but its "possible" to throw your a/f off and get drivability problems.

2. The mass air meter doesn't read incoming air by sensing a "restriction" from the screen... lmao dude. There is a heated wire inside the sampling tube that requires a certain voltage to maintain its temperature. The more air flowing through the tube the more voltage required to keep it heated. The ECU reads the maf voltage, along with the temp from the IAT and determines the volume of air entering the engine.

3. Ignition timing is, of course. controlled by the ecu based on load and rpm. But, and a big but, the timing is based on 87 octane fuel (among other things). Increasing the ignition timing WILL directly relate to more hp - at the expense of higher octane fuel.

Ok lets not SLAM the newbie, cause we've all made some mistakes in the past, but let's get back on topic. I have a BBK Cold Air Intake (Fenderwell Mount), with larger throttle body and larger plenum and almost full exhaust. The little metal grid screen is STILL in the intake because the instructions didn't tell me to take it out. Should I leave it in there or get rid of it and why?

I would keep it in there if I were you. It smooths out the airflow as MD said which will give your MAF a better reading.

You could be forcing too much air through (w/o enough fuel). Also possible that you're misfiring because with more air/compression, it's harder for the spark plug to make the arc. I read an article online that showed dramatic improvements on an supercharged engine just by changing to denso iridium plugs (as much as 30 hp in some parts of the power band) all due to the fact that the stock plugs were misfiring. Hope this helps.

All this is giving me a f***ing headache. I think I'm just going to put the factory intake back on. Can the problem be fixed with a bigger meter?

Might be. Just go get it tuned by the professionals, cause the dealer will always just tell you that the aftermarket parts are causing the problem which is complete bullsh*t
