replace starter
hi guys,
sorry for bringing this up here, but don't know anywhere else to go to.
a friend of mine'sgot a '97 ford taurus that won't crank at all.
I diagnosed it, and found that the problem is the starter.
talked to a shop nearby. they wanted to chargehim $185 to fix it.
I found the starter at 89.99 at a shop a couple of blocks away.
how hard is it to replace it?
i crawled underneath and noticed that it is being hold by 2 bolts and i think a plug???
could you guys give me some tips?
what tools do I need, what should I be looking for etc etc...
I don't think it should be too hard to replace, although I've never done it before.
any help is welcomed...
thanks guys

RE: replace starter
Usually needs a lift t get under it.
If not, make sure the redundant jack stands
are used so that you can live to talk about it later.
Before removing take the +lead from the battery and
connect directly to the big bolt of the starter and see
if it turns.
CAR IN NEUTRAL, brakes on, GLASSES TO AVOID SPARKS.
When replacing dissconnect battery.]
Usually two bolts with SHIMS - COUNT THE SHIMS.
Put tape on wires to make sure you put them back the
same way.

RE: replace starter
Dangerous at best and you risk frying the electronics on the car by testing it that way (disconnecting the + side first). It works fine on older carbed cars.
Test the start once it's outside of the car .
Disconnect the negative battery cable, then jack the car up and be sure to use jackstands You can also use car ramps (probably easiest too). While the bolts look easy to reach there may be clearance issues when trying to geta rachet or wrench in there.
How do you know it's the starter?
