throttle body spacers
I'm a pretty good shadetree mechanic. I can fix what is broke, but not any experience in performance tuning. I can follow directions and add bolt-ons, etc. I see alot of people say that throttle body spacers suck, but no reason why. can someone explain this one to me?

One reason I ask, a friend just bougght an '05 F150 quad cab 4x4. It came with some performance mods including a throttle body spacer. If they do nothing, I'm wondering why ford installed it.

the only reason Ford installed one is to have a place to mount the EGR valve which bleeds spent exhaust gases back into the fresh air/fuel charge to reduce emissions of NOX, oxides of nitrogen, since the lower compression and cats take care of the unburned hydrocarbons and the CO part of emissions. they are not a performance improvement at all.
aside from them holding the EGR valves on the 5.0's aftermarket spacers are intended to give you a power gain. Do they work? Yeah a little bit. They do tend to give you a little more power. but all it is, is peak power. It doesn't probably even change avarage HP due to the degrese of low end. In all the money is probably better spent elsewhere.
