Default Performance

hello guys i'm new as hell here (just signed up minutes ago) and i have some questions.
i do know a little bit.about mustangs but not enough so thats y im here.i just recently bought a 97 gt auto. i wanted a mustang and i got it in great condition for $5,000 bucks. well as u might suspect it's slow as hell. i got it from a guy who repos cars so he cant tell me what was done to it. i know its stock but it does have some exhaust. i cant tell which brand but it sounds better than stock but still not loud enough for my taste. heres my question. i want a quick mod but am not sure what. i know i'm going to get 4.10 gears and a trans-go shift kit but thats in the near future. i was thinking of a cold-air kit but a friend of mine who has a 97 saleen said cak dont give u enough power and they are just used because something about imports (im not sure what he meant) but he said to go with mass air. i also wanted a throttle body. i know 70mm is probably best for my car but i read about c&l's upper intake plenum. my question is do i need the tb and the upper intake plenum. anyways sorry for such the long post.

gears first for sure. 4.10 might be a bit much....could try 3.73 or 3.90. if your going to do the gears and shift kit, you might as well do a 2200-2500 rpm converter while your at it. a new manifold would help the tb make more of a difference.

for exhaust...what is done? if the midpipe is stock, id get either a catless or one with high flow cats.

Your friend wants you to go about it the wrong way - the best hp gains per dollar are on the exhaust side, the worst are on the intake side. Gears and exhaust are the way to go for first mods. A good mid-pipe is key. Also, yea 4.10's are alittle stout for a low rpm powered car like 96-98 GT's, 3.73's would be the better choice since those cars fall on their face after 5k rpm.

First of all 4.10's will work great in your car. Especially being an auto. I put them in my 98 and i love them, gas milage dropped maybe 1mpg, and at 60 it only revs about 400rpm higher. Also get a chip and shift kit in your car and they will help a lot too. As far as a CAI every car will react differently to them so you met get some hp or you might not. Hey i say save a little money and PI head swap.

the only exhaust done is a cat-back system(not sure which brand) it still has the stock mid-pipe and exaust manifolds. i was seriously thinking about a mid-pipe but i live in california so emissions is a serious problem. i would prefer a mid-pipe that has a more muscular american tone than an exotic v-8 one even if i have to sacrifice a bit of power. any help?
