Default One 8.8 gear swap question

Hi, Guys, 1 question. I have the bearing puller and the other tools required to do a ring and pinion swap on my 93 vert 5.0 switching from 2.73s to 3.73s.I have read up on it an think I can attempt to do it myself, Im trying to save the 400 bucks they want to do it at the shop. Here is the question, can I do this myself without the guage to measure the backlash?, I dont want to buy one, and cant locate anyone who will lend or rent one. Is there and old school way to do it with out the guage? thanks!

You can do it without the dial indicator, but to be safe i would purchase a dial indicator with a magnetic base and do the measurements.I just did a gear swap on a 98 gt with 66k miles and the backlash was 0.021 way too loose.if your car has alot of miles on it i would strongly advise on the correct procedure, unless you dont mind possibly having a whining noise.good luck.dont forget to change your speedo gear.
