Ford 221 CU V8. What's it worth?
A couple of years ago I bought a replacement engine for my Early 65 D code Mustang. When I bought the engine I was told that it was a 289 with 78 302 heads on it, rebuilt about 10K before hand, and that it came out of a 1964 Mercury Comet. The engine ran and runs fine. It just didn't have the power that my 289 had. I figured it was due to the 302 heads having 68 CC combustion chambers as opposed to the 54.5 CC chambers on my other engine. I bought a set of rebuilt C4OE 289 heads to swap out the 302 heads to boost power and compression. When I pulled the heads I noticed the cylinders were only 3.5"in diameter (I measured with a micrometer) not the 4" diameter of a 289. The smaller bore means it's a 221 CID V8. I did put the new heads on the engine anyway and itdidboost performance. How rare is a 221 CID engine with fresh stock heads for a 289 (larger intake valve than the 221 head)?
Now I am just aboutfinished rebuilding the 289 that originally came out of the car. I won't need thethe 221 engine. It runs fine, doesn't burn or leak any fluids. Doesn't have any interal noises. How much is it worth? It's a 5 bolt block, has flat top pistons with zero valve relief, cylinders haven't beenbored. Once I put my 289 engine back in the Mustang the 221 has to go. I'm removing the parts I put on it, distributor, aluminum intake and will put a stock 2V cast intake and stock distributor.
Thanks,
Tom
