Hey everybody I'm working on my brother-in-law's '68 Mustang convertible, and I'm at a complete stand still on the brakes. It has drum brakes all around and I can't get the front drums off. Am I missing something? Any tricks I don't know about? It's been sitting for a few years, so are they just rusted to the hub? Any info or tips would be greatly appreciated.

 

They could be rusted solid but it's more likely you just need to turn the brake adjusters in to get the shoes clear of the drums.This ridge is from the shoes wearing away at the drum in the inside,leaving a ring of drum material on the outside.A short handled hammer might be of some help if they are rusted solid.If you can't even get them to wiggle a little bit they might be rusted to the spindle.

 

never messed with the front drum too much...but does it have the spindle nut running through the drum? if not do like chopper said and back the shoes off some and hit it with a hammer

 

Probably just rusted.

 

I already turned back the self adjusters, that wasn't the problem. And when I try to pull the drums off there is very very little wiggle. I appreciate the reply, anyone else please feel free to respond.

 

Found my old resto manual for 65-67 (was for a stang i never got). Did you remove the outer bearing inside the drum? If wiggling dont help youll have to fish it out with your finger. The drum should be able to be pulled off once the bearing is out. Did you back the shoes off as far as theyll go? Like said, you may have a ridge of rust. Keep whackin at the drum with a rubber mallet on the sides top and bottom near the back of the drum.
