Default Temp sending unit and gauge

Does anyone have any info on what the actual resistance range is for the temp sending unit and dash gauge for a 68 with a 289/302 2V? Something just failed and I don't know which component it is. My cheapie book has no troubleshooting help. I checked the wiring and it's fine. Also, I have a Hayden electric fan with the temp probe that goes into the radiator fins to turn the fan on and off. This is not very accurate or dependable. Does anyone have any better suggestions? Thanks
