Default Mechanical issue

Hey fellas my car makes a whining noise when i turn the key i think thats the starter thats not catchinng the flywheel. However at times it makes this loud noise when it does catch the flywheel as if it was grinding metal to metal. I know its not the engine because when I push start it it turns right on effortlessly. Its a 88 GT 5 spd. Any suggestions toughts or ideas.

Please help

Your problem is in the starter.
The drive gear is not contacting the flywheel.

Get it repaired quickly because if it keeps grinding you will need a new flywheel ring gear which means removing the transmission.

Your flywheel might already be missing some teeth [:@] crawl under the car & you should be able to see if that's the problem
