Default Stupid question... Drag racing in a 89 GT Auto

I have a stock 89 GT Automatic 5.0......And a really dumb question.

On saturday, we are having an event at the local track where anyone with a street legal car can drag race. I was wanting to perticipate....But someone said i could blow my engine by racing it.

Is this true? Can my car hit a high enough RPM to wreck it? Or can i floor it and race with no worries?

My cars in good working order...im getting the exhaust done as i type this... But im worried that it might not be able to race...

Sorry for the dumb question....Im new..and this will be the first drag race i ever have done.

Well anycar can hit a high anough RPM to throe a rod or blow your engin. But in an Automatic transmission it is less likely because your car will automadically shift befor that point, unless you are low on transmission fluid and you could have delaied shifting. but I would not worry about it if I were you. But let some other people relpy to your question, they might have some other openions.
