Default engine swap, need advice plz !

Hi, I live in Australia and there are very few mustangs over there (compared to America of course). I am looking into buying a 1970 302W Mustang with a 5.0L engine. Thing is, it's going to be my first car, and that's the one I want (real bad ). So I was wondering (being 18 and not having as much money as I would like) if I could swap the engine and put a 3.0L in or even smaller.... that would save me a lot of money.

So basically what I wanted to know, is what type of engine could I put in ? Would any Ford type engine fit ? or should I use something spécial ?

Thanks for your help and advice.

I had a 71 mach1 with a 351c, I was lucky to get 10 mpg... with the same 3.00 gear. But finding a 200 inline 6 there ( that someone is willing to give up)will be a challenge. There are alot of mods and fabricationalong with that swap. I swapped the big block in mine to a 302 small block, man it was hell. built tranny crossmember from scratch, cut down drive shaft and rebalanced, new radiator for different side hose insert, transmission linkage (never lined up right)new motor mounts, the list goes on.I wouldnt do it. If its gotr a fourbarrel carb. buy a 2, stick with the 3.00 gear, get a fuel regulator and keep your foot out of the gas. and you should be just fine. And besides that a smaller motor in that big *&^% car will have to work harder therefore using more gas.

but to answer your question, yes with alot of work and money you could probably put any rear wheel drive motor in that car
