Default RE: intake

ORIGINAL: 88lx5.0

me and my brother have been arguing about this for a while , he says he 100% sure that cold air intake does nothin for the car, no horsepower or anything. hes says no matter how much air it sucks in it goes through the same size pipe so therefor it does nothin. please explain it so i can show him and shut him up for once.
he's definitely confused and also wrong as he can be. it's the density of the air that matters most, not just the volume of air drawn into the engine. colder air is more dense that warmer air which means that there is more oxygen in the colder air per unit volume of air drawn into the engine and the more oxygen present, the more fuel can be burned which makes more horsepower. he's right about the flow going through the same pipe, but it's the flow density that counts, not just the CFM number. want proof? go to the dragstrip and make a pass in the heat of the day like at 2 pm and without making any changes to the car, make another pass after the sun has gone down and the air temperature has cooled off say 20 degrees. I guarantee the car will run quicker on the second pass every time provided the barometric pressure remains the same for both runs.

If your intake manifold, throttle body, & EGR spacer remain the same then you won't be gaining anything from the cold air due to the air reheating before it reaches the heads. You will see power gain however due to a less restrictive filter & less restrictive plumbing. Get a phenolic spacer & plug the coolant lines in the EGR spacer, then you will see more results.

seems to me if you don't plug the passageway in the intake manifold that lets the exhaust gases get to the EGR valve that plugging off the coolant lines to the EGR spacer will actually make the intake air get hotter, not cooler, as the gases are much hotter than the coolant flowing through the spacer. the coolant lines are there to take away some of the heat carried into the spacer by the exhaust gases, so unless you don't have the gases flowing to the EGR valve, then you are defeating the purpose by plugging off the coolant lines.

Yeah, it doesnt REALLY do anything all it does is suck more air into ur engine faster and cools it down, just to make your car "breathe better" If you get a mass air, exhaust, and headers then do the intake. The intake gives you about 5hp (companies say 15 but thats in their minds lol), but hey every little bit helps!

And it must do something if it makes that swooshing sound, then you know that its suckin air. My friend that drives a honda ex put a intake in his car and you can hear it go into "vtec" lol... It actually sounds good tho. So it does SOMETHING!! if not then it'll give you SOME sound...
