Info on installing gears.
Looking for info on how to install gears. taken the rear out of a 78 mustang before and looking to install 3.73s into my 94 cobra. I never installed gears b4 and want a good explanation of how to do it. I heard thats its kinda hard to do and not something to do if your really not sure but i want to at least read how its done to decide if i can do it or if should have a machine shop do it.
Yes i noticed i posted it in the wrong place the first time too, thanks for reminding me.
So i moved it over to the "Tech" area beacuse i think the rear has nothing to do with 5.0 motors section.
People on this board are so great, anybody else wanna throw me a wise crack? seems thats all ive been getting instead of anserews.

Ok im gathering this is very hard to do and most likely i will not atempt it myself. but what kinda of tools would i need? is there a website that gives info on this type of stuff? Im trying to understand this all beacuse i might have a career in cars if my music doesnt wokr out and i want to be able to say ive done this stuff and get a good feel for it. I think this is probally more then i can handle and like i said, i dont wanna hurt my car and ill do whats best which will probally be machining.
YEa the tool is the only thing holding me back. I work on a budget but i guarntee the tool is probally hard to get and is a decent amount of money.....this is were someone says "Hey so and so has one and what do you know its for sale and were did you hear there expensive?"
God I'm so tired of seeing people tell everyone this is too hard and that is too hard and yeah you should take it to a shop if you do it for the first time. If you have an inkling of common sense and know how to follow directions it is well within your grasp to do it yourself. The first engine I ever built is in my '65 Pontiac and I did all the machine work myself and it's putting out about 450 horses and runs like a champ. If you are willing to learn go for it. Just make sure you have the correct procedure and follow it exactly. As far as checking the backlash, you need a magnetic base dial indicator. I bought mine at Summit for $30. The guys on Horsepower TV did an episode about a rear end rebuild on a Mustang so that would be a good resource. You can buy the video from their site for $20. You can also buy a service manual for your car from http://www.helminc.com and it should have a very detailed procedure in there. Whatever you choose to do, good luck man.
Rear ends aren't really that hard to swap the differential and gears out. To check the backlash you just need a dial indicator. Your also going to need a shim kit to correct backlash. The only thing you may not be able to do your self is take the bearings off. You need a large press to do this and a shop shouldn't charge to much to take the bearings off and put them back on when you have the gears installed. Be sure to give yourself a couple days though because a rear end swap can take many many hours to do, especially if your doing it yourself. If you don't have this kind of time or don't think you have enough experience with cars I'd take it to a shop.
