I would go with a 5.0L from that era. Any of those are going to be candidates for tired drivetrains, and the 5.0L will be less expensive to rebuild and is also less expensive to get some decent power out of.

That said, the 4.6L is better for gas mileage, and the crate engines aren't horribly priced. If you did replace the engine, I would go with a Mach/Cobra DOHC engine for the improved performance.

To save a little money, look for a car with a good body, but a tired engine...but only if you can do the engine swap yourself.

I did do a search. Maybe I was entering the wrong terms, but it turned up no results. If you think that was obnoxious I think you may be a little too sensitive. You replied with no reason to justify your answer at all, and I asked you to do that. I don't care what the reason is, I want INFORMATION to make a decision, not an opinion. The other people that answered had no trouble providing that.

Why would you then say that money is an issue, when I just waid it wasn't? I want to get into a convertible we like for the least amount of money possible, but am willing to spend what is required to get what we want, whether that is a 94 or a 98. I wanted to get a 99 and up, but she doesn't like that body style.

96-98 4.6

Well, you do make a very convincing argument.....

Seriously, please give me a reason why. Money isn't enough of a reason for me to get soemthign I'll regret later. So far, the only thing I can think of is that my wife has a 96 town car with the 4.6 and I can stock less oil filters and such.
There's no need for that kind of attitude and if you are going to be obnoxious, try doing a SEARCH. Parts for a 5.0 are cheaper, 4.6 is more reliable in my opinion and it's a newer car. IF money is an issue...which it seems it is for you, don't buy a mustang. Go buy a car you can "afford" to spend money on.

OK, this is good to know. I am used to the ford trucks, and OBDI and OBDII can be a big deal on some of the mods for certian body styles I have owned on those. A lot of the trucks were speed density until 1997, except CA and MA trucks, which went to MAF in 1994 or 1995, but OBDII came out in 1996, making a MAF conversion very confusing to find parts for. I am also fed up with the speed density system. It drove me nuts because of vacuum leaks and carbon buildup that made it idle very high and perform horribly. My truck I sold got 6-8 MPG.

I probably will go with a 1994 or 1995 then - it seems like this is the consensus I am hearing, and they are cheaper, which always helps.

Now I just need to find one that is clean. I'm tired of owning old vehicles that I try to fix up while I own them. It costs more than just buying a mint to begin with.

5.0s were MAFfrom '89 on I believe.

Imay be a tad biased towards the 5.0s seeing as I have one . Seriously though, if all you are looking for is a weekend cruiser then to be honest the biggest factor I would look at is cost and miles. The 4.6 and 5.0 for the years you listed have almost identical performance (the 4.6 got a nice power boost from '99 on though) with the 5.0 maybe having slightly more low-end grunt. I'm not sure why OBD I or II matters to you unless you plan on tuning it or troubleshooting it yourself or plan on doing some pretty decent mods. The '96 and on also have the PATS systems (anti-theft) standard from the factory. Both engines respond well to bolt-ons, which is what I assume you mean by no radical mods. If you did go the modding route though 5.0s are cheaper to make power out of N/A while 4.6s get the most bang for their buck through super/turbo-charging. The above pretty much applies to GTs, as the Cobras are a whole 'nother animal. The 4.6's Cobras have quite a bit more power over the 5.0 ones using a different version of the 4.6 (DOHC rather than SOHC).

I personally like the 5.0's because I'm a bit old-fashioned and like the 'olpushrod powerplant and prefer the exhaust tone of the 5.0s over the 4.6 and there is slightly more room under the hood if you like turning the wrench yourself.

I think you should stay with 5.0 period. Mods are cheaper....and getting cheaper the longer the 4.6 are being built.
I have a 95 GTS and I love it, I bought it for 1500.00 when I returned from Afghanistan. They are findable for 5000.00 and less all over Texas and the mid-south.

I will tell you one thing my friend I own a 86 V-6 convert anda 94 GT.One thing I decided if getting the absolute best for the buck is the criteria,I would do a nationwide search because in some parts of the country cars hold up better and cost varies regionally. Some of the bargains are worth shipping cross country and you and your wife can have fun looking together good luck Ron

look to get one that has had the top replaced recently. its cheaper to buy the car with a new top already put on than to buy the car and have to buy a new top 1/2 years later like me. if the top has signs of wear it wont last too much longer. when i saw the picts of mine i thought that the top would last me at least a year+ but it dident. just my 2 cents but i advise you take it

EDIT: if u are wondering mines a 94 GT
