Noticed on my way home today there was a loud rattling nise coming from under the car and stopped and checked it out . Thought it was a bad cat on the exhaust and when I drove it to go get it checked out at the exhaust shop, it went away. The exhasut guy said my cats are solid and exhaust didnt rattle at all. So my question what could it be? it comes and goes! Could it be tranny?? I have a 5-speed and the rattling can be heard when not in gear. When I rev it it makes the noise as well/./ ANy thoughts??

 

Sounds like a loose heat shield (most likely) orexhaust pipe rattling against something to me. I'd put it up in the air and check clearence around the pipes. Tap the pipes near the heat shields to see if they rattle.

The exhasut guy checked the cats and the heat shield doesnt seem to be damged at all. What in the world could it be. Someone said it could be throw out bearing?? But wouldnt that only happen when in gear?? The noise happens when it is in neutral as well.

 

Is the noise affected by operating the clutch?

 

I don't know what year you have, or any mods, but when I got my exhaust put on, I had the same typeof ghost rattling. I took it back and they put it on the stand, and we looked and noticed that there was a bolt that was hitting the side of the exhaust pipe...a quick sawzall later, that was fixed. Other rattles I've had was a misaligned hanger on the exhaust, and that's been about it.

 

NO the noise is gone now and dont know what the heck it was. The sound happened when the clutch was depress and and not in gear as well.

 

Is it a rattle or more like a bird chirping?
