Carb shoots fuel out the top! why?!
ok guys, so i just bought this mustang. its got a 302 4bbl engine in it, and its suppose to have an aftermarket cam in it. its running like junk, and i know its gotta be the timing. the guys a bought it from said it was a 265 cam. can you help explain if all possible what that means? and how do i get it into the right time. at tdc it wont even run. it spits fuel out the top of the carb no matter what i do. it runs way retarded and the engine bounces all over. everything seems good on it. compression, valves are all working properly. its brand freaking rebuilt. any advice or questions? i need help, cant figure this one out. thanks for all your help if any.

How can fuel be pushed out the top of the carb?? [&:]Geez the cam timing might be WAAAYYY OFF,, so much so that the intake valve is still open during the start of the compression stroke?? Something must be blowing air "up" the carb in order to blow the fuel up..?

If the fuel is pouring out of the float vent tube then I would agree with JD that the float is stuck (possibly the needle valve has debri's in it) or is inproperly adjusted, however if the fuel is spraying back up from the venturi ports then GreyStang has the right idea, open valves during the compression stroke. ie improper cam timing, bent valves, or over adjusted vavles.

Need more details. Dirt in the needle valves if fuel is comming out the vent tubes. If it's back firing, timing is wrong, wrong firing order or the wrong balancer for the timing pointer location.

the fuel is shooting out the top of the carb. just like it would do if the timing was off. i checked the valves. they seem to be working fine. the thing runs, just not very well. the carb is brand new. i dont think its dirty in there. but i havent taken it apart. its like a push the gas like i was accelerating and it shoots out of the carb. like a popping sound. but if i slowly ease on the gas, like really slowly, it doesnt do it. im not sure what the timing is at, i dont see any little markings on the balancer.

Your accelerator pump shot could be really lean. It'd cause an intake backfire and the rush of air out of the carb pulls fuel through the boosters and it sprays up in a mist. Or your timing is what the hell off, either cam or ignition. The fact that it doesn't do it when you slowly ease into the throttle makes me think it's accelerator pump related. What carb/jets/pump cam/squirter and what engine setup do you have?
