RE: under dash antenna
To get the best radio reception the antenna must be the correct length for the radio wave being intercepted. That's why CB radio antennas are so long and VHF antennas are so short. The antenna's length has to be full length, half length,or quarter length to recieve a good signal.A full length antenna will recieve much better than a quarter length model.
If there are any boosters out there that actually work I'll bet Crutchfield will have them for sale.
Check all the connections at the antenna and the radio end and look for corrosion or a loose hook up.

Ive heard of using a loose wire itseld and concealing in within the A pillar outside the car, basically ending up by the top of the windshield under the plastic. I want to do that.

well i took a better look, and the antenna "holder" on the car....(im not sure of the terminology)
is damaged, I tried to remove the old antenna and it broke off in the hole.
Where can i get a cheap replacement and is it hard to reinstall this? Should I take it to someone or is it doable by myself?
Thank you!

RE: under dash antenna
Just about any audio shop can come up with an antenna that will fit any car.
As far as hiding the antenna behind anything metal, you'll lose reception. That's why antennas are on the outside of the car in the first place.
GM (for one) used to use an antenna mounted in the windshield. They were terrible!!! The roof shielded the signal, and depending on the way the car was pointed in relation to the transmitter, you either could pick up the station clearly or not so clear.
