RE: check engine light goes on and off
idle = off
rev = on?
Do you have aftermarket exhausts? It's basically the car's environmental system telling the car that it is getting abnormally high pollutant readings and it's recycling the exhausts into your engine to be burnt a second time. Not a good thing, I think you should use some kind of EGR simulator to eliminate that...

It is most likely the EGR... My bro had the same problem with his.. take the EGR valve off the spacer, and spray some carb cleaner into it, and massage the prong in and out to make sure it is not getting stuck shut/open... This worked for us.

The fact it's flashing on you could mean the O2 sensor is getting some funky readings. Take the O2 sensor(s) out and clean off any carbon deposits on them. Use a brass brush, no carb cleaner, and compressed air if you have it. Do you smell gas coming out of the exhaust? Could be lean or rich mixture that's trippin' the light. If you smell gas, it's definitely a rich mixture.

RE: check engine light goes on and off
the computer turns on the check engine light when it reads an error, and then turns it off if the error does not occur for several "trips." The softcode should still be stored in your computer, but if the car is not manifesting any problems, and the light goes on and off, it is more than likely a simple and innocuous misreading-O2 sensor or another sensor. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it in the slightest.
