Removed the # 1 plug wire and attached a ignition tester to the wire then clamped the tester to a nearby bracket. Also test #3 #5 and #8.

hes using a spark tester so hes doing it 100% right, actually more correct then what most people do.

check the coil, if the coil is getting spark, then check the coil pickup inside the distributor, (not sure but i think its called the stator), if the stator is good then its probly the TFI module. im not familiar with the 86 but it should have a TFI.

I checked the coil the same way, was that correct? I'm not real sure what the TFI is or the coil pickup. Sorry for all the questions. As you can probably tell I'm not much ofa mechanic.

ya if your getting spark after the coil, the little module on the side of the distributor is the TFI, and if you open up the distributor cap take out your rotor under neath the rotor should be the coil pick-up, and before you buy a NEW tfi have it tested at a local parts store to save some money

Thanks man. Idid a little diging andif I understand correctly, the pick is a trigger for the coil, it tells it when to send juice. Since I don't have spark comeing from the coil I'm under the impresion the pick up is at fault.
Now with all that done and still no spark, should I go buy a new destributor, or try to change out the pick up?
