Default Stripped Oil Plug

I have a 69 Mustang Mach I and the oil plug appears to be stripped. The bolt would not tighten so a new, slightly larger bolt was installed and appeared to have worked, but after awhile it too is leaking. I heard there's self-tapping bolts but I was wondering if anyone has used one or if they have any other suggestions. I really dont want to swap out the entire oil pan just for this.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Shawn

There are oversized self tapping plugs available. You can also use an expanding rubber plug. Go talk to the guys at NAPA.

If you can remove the pan, drill out the existing hole using a drill bit big enough to get rid of all the threads, buy a tap that will fit the hole you have drilled, thread your new hole and find a bolt to match your new threads and there ya go.

Taking the pan off to repair it or replace with a newer 1 is the way to go so you wont hit the same problem next time you remove that bolt.

If you are going to drill it out, make sure the bolt you buy for your new threads is a weaker metal than the pan, maybe check out some aluminum bolts or some really crappy alloy. This will prevent stripping of the threads in the pan, only the bolt will strip and bolts are easier to replace than pans.
