Squeaks when turning
I have this annoying squeak when I turn now. Before anyone says anything no it's not my girlfriend in the passenger seat <IMG src=smileys/smiley17.gif border="0">lol. It used to be just when I turn while the car was not moving much like when I'm getting out of a parking spot but now I hear it when I turn a corner sometimes. It sounds like a screen door hinge that needs oil. I put my car on a lift and to my disappointment I saw no grease fittings on the steering joints. Will my steering joints break or freeze up when I'm driving? Since I don't have grease fittings does this mean I'm going to have to replace them and if so is this a big and expensive project? </P>
It might **** like that is nothing to play with..when I was in school I lost a nice *** impala when a broke a tie rod end @ 50 mph..we rolled 3 times...and yes this is meant to scare you//get it fix<img border="0" src=smileys/smiley16.gif border="0">
i think i have the same problem. i looked under my car also and found my left tie rod was greasy but the grease was on the outside of the rubber cover thing. i just whiped it off. i dont know what to do to fix it.
Just have somebody turn the wheels while you reach around the tire and hang on to the outer tie rod end,you should be able to feel the vibration when it squeaks,it's not a big deal to replace them but you WILL need and alignment afterwards. And yes it is a saftey issue!
No fun when one wheel points to the left and the other is pointing straight, would make it kinda hard turn like that eh? Yea be sure to get it looked at, but breaking tie rods don't happenvery often anymore, Ive never seen it actually happen myself unless the car was wrecked.
Come on guys newer ford have a problem with squeeking tie rod ends. <FONT size=4>Yes it is a pain in the @$$ to listen too. No it is not Dangrous/unsafe do not panic it is no big deal.</FONT></P>
<FONT size=2>They are very easy to replace and if done correctly there is no need to take and get aliginment done. When you remove one count the number of turns it takes to get it off and install the new one the same amount of turns when installing another way is to mark the hreads where the tie rod stops and install the new one at the same spoy. This is very easy and 9 out of 10 times the front end alignment is the same as it was befor doing the repairs Good luck and don't worry the tie rod is not going to break as VSHAYES said they never break inless you are in a wreck.</FONT></P><edited><editID>67aquafastback</editID><editDate>37912.9716087963</editDate></edited>
Thanks67aquafastback<IMG src=smileys/smiley1.gif border="0">.It's not really a loud squeak but you can hear it.Is it expensive and do I have to replace the tie rods or justthe bearings at the ends? I have a shop that I can rent a lift so if the parts aren't too expensive I'll fix it next weekend.
Just the tie rod ends there are no bearings needed. Pick up some cew cotter pins and a big hammer. Wack the steering knuckle where the tie rod goes into it this will pop the tie rod loose, do not hit the tie rod itself that will not get it out. Make sure to count the turns or threads and get it the new one installed in the same position.
