5.0 Project Car(is it worth it???)
Just a question since all of you are more experienced with this stuff(seeing as im 15) my Dad's girlfriends best friend is getting rid of a 1991 5.0....some problems are...The car does NOT have a T-5 trans in it....the owner swapped in a Tremec TKO trans and he told me the input shaft is either cracked or sheared.
This makes me wonder what other sort of damage was done to the trans/clutch/drivetrain. Those TKO's are pretty resilient and to damage the input shaft must mean there was some "beatings" involved with that car.
2) The tires are dry rotted pretty much off the rims
3) And some body work will need to be done..
4) Insurance- Since this will bemy first car, the insurance will be ASTRONOMICALLY high for me!! Iknow thatI could exspect to pay over 2000$ for insurance a year easy...
3) Winter driving- I live in new england...nothing more to be said
4) frame damage/body rot- i have NO CLUE as to whether or not this car was in an accident or how much rot is on the car....I'll have to crawl around to "see what i can see".
Some ups are
1)The engine (at least outwardly) appears bone stock, with the exception of a Motorsport cap/rotor and wires....the intake system and exhaust were unaltered (I never crawled under the car to see if it had an aftermarket exhaust-cat back and/or H-pipe) and, as it's a 1990, it's a MAF system rather than the Speed density system they had on the 87-88 models, which is definitely a good thing.
2) One owner car has all the papers and wants 800 O.B.O.
What i figured i would have to do is i have a ex step dad of mine im really close with and hes a certified transmission specialist and he offered to redo the tranny for me if the tranny is salvageable.also i wanted to take it to a machine shop like my schools(i go to a tech school) and have them clean it up and maybe bore it.030 over to a 306 CID. Suspension would be nice. alos cobra intake throttle body and others and obviously exhaust(maybe one chamber exhaust)...i have the tools in my automotive shop to do it ill be getting a job i have enough saved up for the car itself and figured it be a nice project car and its better to learn i guess..just figured id ask your guys opinion on all this!!!! Much Thanks

RE: 5.0 Project Car(is it worth it???)
i think it sounds like a good deal. The broken trans is worth about 500 alone. As for insurance foxbodys really arent that bad i dont know why most insurance companies have low rates on them. As for the winter i dont know hopefully someone who had driven theirs through snow will lwt you know how bad it is

Look for rust 1st, biggest problem. Any kind of bad rust under the car and you'd be better of skipping it. I doubt that the input shaft was sheared if it really has a tremec in it and its stock, maybe a broken clutch disc..

don't sound like its a bad car for $800 bucks. They are fun and cheap to work on. If you don't want to drive it in the winter than why not just save up and get a beater for winter use.
As for insurance, put the car under your fathers name and it shoudnt be too much. When I first got my 88GT when I was 15, my insurance was like $800 a year (for liability obviously)

If you can fix it cheaply and there is no rust, get it. 5.0's aren't bad at all insurance wise and easily moddable and fixable. So many options and so much potential with that car.

RE: 5.0 Project Car(is it worth it???)
i live in ontario and i drove my 88 lx all winter and it wasnt as bad as i thought as long as you can drive like a human and not a complete idiot i only got stuck once going up a hill i got stuck at a red light and then couldnt go anywhere when it turned green.
the 88 had some frame rot and thats the reason i sold it i wanted to slowly start building it up but i was worried about the frame splitting.
other than the frame it doesnt sound to bad buy some cheap rims and decent tires and drive it home and start working
