Default Rear main sealo?

I believe i have a rear main seal leak. I was looking into seeing how muh it would cost and is the diagnosis correct? i searched the forums and other sites and it seems they have the same problem(rear main seal) . I have an oil leak which is quite noticable when parked on pavement. My dad makes me park on the grass. I took a look underneath and it looks like it is leaking of the tranny, the leak is definately oil. any help would be appreciated thank you all

If your 94 is a GT or GTS then I would bet its the rear main. I think the 5.0 was born with a rear main leak. The rear main will often look like its leaking from between the tranny and motor. Look at the top of the motor to rule out a leak there and look at the oil pan gasket also.

yeah if you have a 5.0. Then first thing i would check is PCV valve, and valve cover gaskets. They usually tent to go first. then look for oil pan leaks, and last the rear main seal. Also if you have an auto could also be the pump seal.

I must have been lucky. I replaced my rear main with 171,000 miles and it wasn't leaking a drop. I had the tranny out so I decided it was a good time to change it. The late model 5.0 has a 1 piece seal that is very reliable.

this might be a stupid question but do you have to lift or take out the engine to fix a rear main seal.

No...just the tranny and bellhousing. The exhaust obviously has to come off as well. There is a special tool to put the new seal in. It is basically a short piece of pipe that matches the OD of the seal. I've seen some plans on the web for making one out of PVC pipe. I had the real tool so I didn't need to make one.
