Minor HP upgrades...how does it all work...
You will need a tuner programmed specificaly for your vehicle. Normally you won't need to download anything. In the future. as you become accustomed to the tuner's functions, you can download new improvements as they become available. At first, just plug it in and follow instructions. As far as fuel economy, most enthusiast recommend a Honda for that! LOL! However, you can tune it for 87 Octane and enjoy the savings infuel cost, as far as actual MPG, no guarantees. Don;t forget, even the 87 tune is optomized for best performance! Many in these Forums do say that their mileage is better, along with more performance. In my case, there is a great deal more HP and low end grunt, but, I can't say the mileage is better, but not worse either. Don't buy a chip or tuner to increase economy, that is not their purpose. Try this Predator Diablo Forum, you will learn a lot!

Has anyone yet asked (or did I miss it) what year car? Size motor? Tranny? Those are major factors in figuring out what the best next steps should be.

2000 3.8L - Now we are getting somewhere.....
V6 modding is a step or two different than V8 modding. First thing to open up hp is to get a good cat back exhaust. From there, I would get a steeper gear and a t-lock for the back... 3.73 would wake it up, without killing MPG. After that, I'd get a better suspension for it. Get the power to the ground.
From there, one can nickel and dime small power out here and there.... or go big with forced induction of some kind. Depends on the budget.

you have the right idea...a custom chip comes preprogrammed from a dealer to fit your specific vehicle. a custom tuner also contains preprogrammed tunes for your specific vehicle, but as everyone has mentioned, a tuner is much more versatile. Gas mileage, in theory, does go up, but for me, I found my gas mileage to be the same or less than when I had a stock tune but that is only because i drive much faster after retuning. many people ask "well why didn't ford just tune it better to begin with for more power and gas mileage?" the answer is simple...a sport tuned ECU is much more raw, and if you have an automatic, the shifting is erratic and harsh. most n00bz want a smooth, soft comfy comfy performing vehicle that runs on 87 octane, which is what the stock tune does. but if you're a real man, you'll appreciate the quicker shifts, the sweeter throttle response, and the rawness that is unleashed.

On a 3.8L I've avoid a tuner until you do something that needs it, like swap gears or add a larger component to your fuel system.

i guess im half a man lol
but nah on the realz, you all are throwing out a BUNCH of good ideas BUT
let me be a lil bit clearer with what im looking for. the chip thing, i think is the best move i can make now since my $$$ game is TIGHTER than a cavemans virgin daughter with a chastity belt made of flinstone rocks steel!!!! [:@]
aside from regular stuff....i need shocks...i need my rotors cut..annoying...i need tints...got a summons yesterday for talking on phone...and um...everything else yall are mentioning for me, i trying to put it all in order from most important to least.
i dunno. i mean here are a few important ?S for all whove been blessingme with replies to answer.
1. think back to when you FIRST started with your stock stangs. what was it you first did? did you know what you were doing hence the reason you did what you did in the order you did it in or did you kinda just do it to do it ???
and
2. is it fair to say that with a tuner, ill get the best bang for the buck right now???
NO, a tuner won't do much for a 5 speed car without other mods.
With more info, I'd say go get a Bullitt suspension set up. It will really improve your handling and take care of your worn out shocks/struts all in one deal.
FIRST performance mod for the 3.8L car should be a cat back exhaust. I reccomend either Spin Tech or Magnaflow. They are dyno proven to make the most tq gains. People who say "Flowmaster this and that" are riding a V8 bandwagon that doen't work with the Sixer crowd. If you don't want to pay for the two suggested, your best bet is some Force Pros. Cheaper knock off and still have a flow that works well with the even firing V6.
