Default Rear Diff questions?

Little history, my 69 mustang is what I have been using for a lot of automotive teaching, from books and my father. Have spent many hours under the hood and working on it to get to what it is today.

One thing I havent touched and that I am a little unsure of the terms is the diff. I understand the concept of what a differential does but am curious as to what a couple terms mean:
Traction Loc: Is this the same as limited slip?
Lim.Slip.: I understand this allows one tire to spin at a different speed then the other?

What I dont get is what causes one wheel burnouts? I have seen my car hook up at the track to get two wheels going and sometimes one wheel will only spin. What causes this and how do you fix it?

*Also if anybody knows of a website of what types of differential Ford put in mustangs, like a timeline deal of 65-73, and what was stock.
