Default RE: short antenna question

Just put mine on earlier this week 8 inch shorty from AM. I can't see where radio reception would change unless you live out in the sticks away from a major city. I think chopping down the factory antenna is ghetto looking!!! You still have a factory antenna just shorter!!! IMO

Yea, same thing, just hack sawed it, glued the ball thats on the end back on, and absolutely no difference in station quality. I'm sure at a certain point you could cut too much off, but since there are antennas sold at 14 and 10 inches, I bet its fine. Now if you try to cut it at like 3 or 4 inches, then yea, I bet thered be a problem!
Why didn't I think of that? Much cheaper.

Default RE: short antenna question

i bought a universal antenna at o reillys for $6 and cut the shaft down to 14in exactly. if I understand right, 14in is a length that will can be used to pickup optimal reception on the fm frequency wavelength; anything outside of that length, other than another corresponding wavelength (8in is anothercorresponding length)will lose reception.i think 14in is also an optimal length for am stations too. oh, if you get a black antenna and it gets scratched, you can use aerosol automotive trim paint and it covers the scratches right up and blends nearly perfectly with the original paint.anyway, i just used a hacksaw to cut it and it follows the roof of my car and, in my case, it has actually helped with reception; i get less static and pick up stations from a farther distance than i could with my oem antenna. a good and inexpensive mod for your car
