Default vacuum and brakes

I have a few questions...
When the brakes are applied, does the brake booster use vacuum? Would it cause a drop in vacuum when i apply the brakes?
Also, would a major vacuum leak cause the engine to die after startup? My friends car dies after a few seconds after startup.
I don't have any information on it yet. I'm just wondering... He said pressing the brake pedal kills it.

Any ideas would be helpful! Thanks!
