Stock autos are not as good as the manuals, but built autos are a different story. As for shifting the auto by hand, it's not made to do that and you'd be better off leaving it in drive and keeping your foot to the floor.

QFT. My friend ruined the trans in his escort by shifting it manually, what I think really killed him though was kicking it in and out of OD on the highway.
