Default Overdrive - turning it on/off while driving

Is it hazardous to the transmission (on an auto in particular) if you turn on/off the overdrive while accelerating? I'm guessing not since its just a forced gear shift...

i believe so because the rpm ranges are different between on and off

Keep it in overdrive on the highway. You really only need regular drive while driving thru town, passing, or downhill for long distances. I would not shift from OD into D back into OD at high speeds pretending its a stick. That creates heat in the transmission which will kill it if youre not careful or if the transmission is stock.

A lot of autos do not like being pushed like that unless they are built for it. So if you want to be able to drive an auto hard, id look into getting a purpose-built automatic, or just swap the auto with a stick.

Another thing is that if you shift out of overdrive, your engine will scream itself to pieces if youre already going too fast. So your transmission is not the only thing to watch out for.

Just leave the OD turned "ON",the transmission won't shift into overdrive until the right combination of RPM and power is reached anyway.
