Default Speedometer Drive Gear Question

I have an 87 GT convertible 5.0 manual tranny with 65K on it. The speedometer and cruise control no longer work. OK, thought that I needed a new cable...pulled everything out and cable is OK. Removed cruise speed sensor & cable from tranny and everything rotates up to the speedometer. Seems to me that the drive gear in the tranny is FUBAR. Is this a common occurrence? or is my diagnosis all wet?

If I am correct, the tranny has to be dropped to replace the gear which methinks will be very expensive.

Any thoughts????

Default RE: Speedometer Drive Gear Question

Speedo and cruise doesn't work at all. When I remove the driven gear/speedsensor/cable assembly from the tranny, I can turn the gear and the speedo moves indicating that everything from the speedo to the driven gear operates. I therefore conclude that the drive gear in the tranny is bad. This really seems strange to me and was wondering if anyone else had ever had this happen? Seems like it will be an expensive repair.
