Vinyl tops on classic mustangs

Vinyl tops on classic mustangs
I am restoring a 1968 mustang coupe which had a white vinyl top on it. When I removed the top there was a foam pad underneith which is glued to the top, was this common practice by Ford or is it an aftermarket job?
