thanks guys</P>
Hey bud, don't be fooled, your car is an all-American muscle machine, and with a little work and proper tuning, you will be street sweeping all those ricers to the curb without breakin' a sweat. The 289 is a small V8, but you can harness some serious power with it. To answer your question, launch RPM is the engine speed at which you leave the line in a drag race, whether it be an auto or manual, it doesn't matter. If you have anybody in your family with engine building experience, consider rebuilding the 289 with a hotter cam, and an intake to match the power range of the cam, some long-tube headers, and maybe have some work done to your heads to increase your airflow if you don't want or can't afford to purchase somealuminum heads. You can have them ported, have them fitted for oversize valves or whatever, and you will see gains in power. Probably the best thing you can do is get some lower gears, such as 3.73. You won't want to go muchlower than that on a stock 289 because your engine has pretty good torque and you want to make use of it as much as you can. All this is relatively cheap too, and you can do it a little at a time. Rebuilding an engine is not hard at all to do, once you learn the basics. Just have a trustworthy machine shop handle all the machine work. </P>
Don't underestimate your classic. You can cause some serious ego damage with a few enhancements. <IMG src=smileys/smiley2.gif border="0"></P><edited><editID>USAMuscle</editID><editDate>37933.0590509259</editDate></edited>
wow thanks alot USAmuscle. actually my 289 has been completely rebuilt with a .30 overbore and the crank turned and the heads have been reworked and all that other stuff. but its all stock stuff on it. right now im driving it with around 7,000 miles on it. my dad rebuilt it, hes really really good with motors. hes actually a chevy man. he just likes the mustangs alot. thats probobly what im going to do, is get a 4 barrel edelbrock performer intake and a 600 holley on it. i want just a mild cam in it, and definently some headers. right now the only thing this thing has on it is true 2 1/4 dual exhaust through turbo mufflers. its got an 8 inch rear end with what i believe to be 3:00 gears in it. im a junior in high school, so i have to afford 20 bucks a week in gas for this and i really dont want 3:73's because of the gas mileage. do you think it would be a big deal if i just kept the 3:00's?
