I have no Idea what is the overdrive used for? what is the difference betwen having over drive on or not?

O/D lowers engine RPM when driving on the highway. Saves on gas & makes the engine run quieter.

It's like a really low gear, meant for what GreyStang had said, highway cruising. It just helps alot with fuel mileage.

no. it is better to have overdrive on anytime to save economy and all. if you want to punch it from o/d (4th gear) or appx. 60ish mph, just pedal to metal it and it will downshift to 3rd....

Well, it keeps the car from shifting a lot in traffic = cooler tranny temps.

yea its better on gas milage and make it so say a 4 cylinder auto can cruise on the highway at asay 85 at or around 3000-3500 rpms.....really nice
