Default 98 GT running lean

Hey everyone, this is my first post on the forums, so thanks in advance for all the help I'm sure I'll get!!

I just bought my first Mustang, a 98 gt. I'm having trouble starting it. It takes a while for the engine to start, and when it does, it sometimes runs at very low rpms for a couple of seconds. Once I get it started though, it runs great!!!

The problem was starting to bother me, so I borrowed an Innova code reader, and came up with these two codes (the check engine light is on btw) P0174, P0179 (system too lean, bank 1 and bank 2). Any ideas of what I should try first?? I'm thinking fuel filter would be the easiest and cheapest... Thanks for the help!!!!

Well, a clogged fuel filter or failing fuel pump can cause a lean condition. However, failed oxygen sensors can as well. I would also check the condition and cleanliness of the mass air flow sensor.

So I cleaned the MAF sensor, and that didn't really seem to do anything, so tonight I replaced the fuel pump. That helped a little, but the car still has trouble starting, and when it does, it seems like it's choked for a few seconds... Any other ideas??

Fuel Filter? I had these same codes with a bad O2 sensor.

+1 on Fuel Filter. If you have the means to change the Fuel Pump so easily, a Fuel Filter should be no problem. Be sure to install properly, Fuel Filters are directional. Should be an FL-986B I believe. Look for the Arrow on the filter housing, it will point in the direction of the flow towards to engine.

I'm sorry guys, I accidentally put fuel pump instead of fuel filter. I replaced the FILTER... my bad... Tonight I was driving the car, and it had very little power... like it just lost everything. I know for a fact the car is running lean. Should my next step be to change the fuel pump, or should I try something else first??
Thanks, and sorry for my typo...

Um, cheapest and easiest first. Do the O2 sensors. It's pretty common for them to go out. Also, reset your codes after changing any part out.
