Default air fuel ratio gauge not working

i just installed a new sunpro air/ratio gauge in my stang and it goes from lean to rich non-stop.now when i accelerate or brake hard then it works like it should but on normal driving its just constently going from lean to rich. now i hear people say that its my o2 sensor and that i need to go buy a wideband o2 sensor. is this true? and what is the difference?

Narrow band A/F is just a light show from Pep Boys. Buy a wide band if you want anything that will really tell you info.

I think the narrow band air/fuel gauges are only correct when at idle

As has been said, the narrowband sensor can only tell you if your mixture is 14.7, NOT how close or far away it is. This is essentially useless, because your mixture oscillates and changes depending on load, RPM, and a whole host of other factors. Furthermore, there are many times when you don't want the AF to be 14.7. You may want it higher or lower, depending on the situation. Simply knowing that you are above or below 14.7 does not help you out. You need to know HOW FAR above or below you are.

A wideband AF gauge will tell you this. Most kits come with a controller, a sensor, and a gauge. You must put the sensor in the exhaust stream, and it will tell you exactly what your mixture is (between about 9.1-22.4 AF).

This is the one I use. This kit comes with the gauge, sensor and controller. It's everything you need to start viewing and logging your AF data.
