Default u joint problem

So i have been having noise issues from under my car. When i looked under the car i noticed there was a ring (about 3 inch long and 5 inch in diameter) free floating that looks like it would cover the u joint closest to the transmission. It has two holes side by side each other and im fairly certain this is whats causing the noise. What is this ring or collar called and is it supposed to be bolted near the u joint? Has anyone else had this problem before? Just looking for some insight into the problem.

thanks,
-Ben

If it's just rattling around on the driveshaft it's probably pretty likely that is the cause of the noise. We ****can those when we do tranny jobs just for that reason.
