Default Non Mustang trans problem

Yes, yes, yes this is a Mustang forum but I dont trust anyone else for car advice so....my wife's 98 1.7L 4 speed auto is having problems. The problems started a month ago or so. The trans surges and shutters when the A/C is on, and sometimes when the A/C isnt on. I can also smell something that smells like there is something buring when the car is driving....any ideas of what I can look at first? Fluid levels?....

Thanks,
Matthew

You should be checking the fluid levels, even if the car is not having problems.

You need to take it to a transmission shop that will scan it during a testdrive. A lot of shops charge for this but there are some that don't. I work for an Aamco shop and we do it for free. I'm not sure where you are in California but there is probably an Aamco somewhere close. It's pretty hard to say what it might be without driving it but if I had to guess, the surging and shuttering may be a torque converter clutch problem.
