Hello i wanted to know is it hard to bleed your brakes the first time cause i really wanted to them them myself to say a little money and i have plenty of time to do it. The main question that i had besides that is do i need some sort of scan tool for the car. i read up on the internet where it said if your car has abs you would need such a tool is this really true? if not then i could knock this job out in a few hours myself. and if anyone has any instruction for bleeding the brakes i would really appreciate it.

 

Buy yourself a repair manual. You will learn quite a bit. You sound like you have never worked on a car before. Bleeding the brakes doesn't take hours. The only reason you need to do that is if the brake pedal feels spongy or you can press it to the floor. I'd wait to bleed them until I got brake pads if I were you.

 

You do not need a special tool if you have ABS brakes.The best way to do it is to jack up the front of the car and take the wheels off,remember to support the car with jack stands,and not to rely on the hydraulic jack if that's what you're using.

Put a bucket under the caliper to catch the fluid.Have a friend get inside the car and pump up the brake,then hold the brake pedal down while you crack the bleeder,tell him to keep it pressed to the floor until you close the bleeder,then to pump the pedal up again until it's hard.

Do this a few times until there's a steady stream with no air in it coming out of the caliper.

Then go to the other side of the car and repeat.

If your replacing the brake pads before you do this,take the cover off of the brake fluid reservoir to release the pressure while collapsing the calipers.

 

It will be easier if you have someone with you while your doing this to push on the break pedal while you are pumping the line....
