Default RPM gauge trouble.

On my 05 GT my RPM gauge will be off by 2k RPMs or more. Ive been idling before and its read 3k RPM and its read 0 before. Its also be stuck at 2k and 3500 at times. This has been happening since saturday. Anyone had a problem like this before or know what it might be?

Thanks in advance,

Nathan

You either have a bad tachometer or a bad PCM/ECM. Your best bet would be to take it to someone that has a scanner that will display engine data while it's running and see what the scanner says the RPM's are. If the scanner is also funky, then you have a bad computer. If the scanner appears to read okay, the gauge is likely bad.

Ok i appreciate the help...I have an SCT tuner and a couple days ago it the check engine light came on. I looked up the DTC on my tuner and it gave me a code, P2196. could that be related to the problem im having? and where do i look to see what that code means?

Hi,

Yup, thats a bank 1, sensor 1 o2 code.

You could check that sensor with a DVOM and see how fast the 02 is switching (between 0.3 to 0.8 mv) or use a scan tool to access the data. That code is a high voltage code which indicates that bank is running rich.

I would also look at STFT and LTFT data also.

Hope this helps.

sorry guys forgive me, im a little slow when it comes to a lot of this stuff. now the code im getting does it have anything to do with the trouble i have with my RPM gauge?

also where could i get a hold of a scan tool or a DVOM? a ford shop or would performance shops have them?

also are we talking about retuning the car again since you say its running rich?

thanks in advance and sorry if i sound like a retard,

Nathan

Don't appologize for asking questions. Everyone has to learn somehow. As for the code, it will have nothing to do with your tachometer not working. You would probably be wise to take it to a shop that will scan it for you. A lot of shops will charge for this service but there are some that don't. I work at an Aamco transmission shop and we do it for free. It's a national chain so you might look in the phone book and see if there is one near you.

Don't get too bent out of shape if you take it to a shop and they charge you to scan it. The scanners that automotive shops use cost upward of 4 to 8 thousand dollars so it only makes sense that they might charge you for the service.
