Is it illegal to sell the vin and title off of a car and keep the car? Someone has offered to buy the vin and title off of my old rusted out 68 'stang coupe because they can't get a title for their track car and they want to use the one on mine on theirs. I suppose as long as the "authorities" didn't find out about it, it'd be alright... right?! [&:]

Not necessarily. You can sell them your whole car for parts. If they use your dash, etc, they can title it under that vin. Restorations sometimes require that. You have a rusted out W-30 with all of the goodies but the body is shot. You have a perfect cutlass of the same body style. You can literally take the body of the good one and swap all of the W-30 parts onto it, and now you have a perfect body with number matching still. You have just given yourself new sheetmetal. I am not sure how you are talking about doing it, but just check around first because it can be a fine line. Basically it is not illegal to take two cars and make one good one. Is that what you are talking about??

2 cars can't share the same VIN, so yea it's illegal. You'd need to scrap one of the cars.

Even the fasteners that are used to hold the VIN plate down are special. There's a BIG black market just for those fasteners.

This is what is known as rebodieing a car, it does NOT MEAN you have a numbers matching car if you do this. In fact this is a huge problem in the collector car hobby right now,. Swapping VIN #'s is pretty much illegal any way do it. Your best bet would be to sell the guy you entire car, and from there what he does with it is non of your concern

I pretty much agree, sounds illegal... Best thing to do is ask DMV or some police officer.. Better to be safe than in jail...

My car is completely rusted out past the point of restoration. The kid that wants to buy it from me is building a track car with some other friends and they obviously can not get a track registration for it. So he offered me some money for it and now I'm thinking about it, idk I'll probably do it. Where can I sell those fasteners at?

I have never heard of a track registration. When we built up the R/S car it started as a body in white from Ford, it never had a VIN# or title, and it was raced at tracks all over the country. The whole thing sounds fishy to me, but I would strip any good parts from the car, sell those on ebay, then sell him the shell with the VIN, what he does with it then is out of your control.
