Do you mean it's burning up? Have you taken the alternator to the parts store to have it tested? I think we need more info about what's happening before we find an answer. The 89 is supposed to have a 75 amp alt - why the 130?

Well, could be a lot of things - if the week old alternator checks bad at Auto Zone, return it and try another one. If you can't return it, you might be able to replace just the voltage regulator part (not sure which alt you've got, but the volt reg is probably built into the alternator). If it fries again you'll have to dig deeper than we can do here on the forum because something in the system is frying the voltage regulator.

If the alternator checks out okay at Auto Zone... re-install it and...
1. Check belt tension.
2. Make sure the battery connections are clean and tight.
3. Make sure all connections to the alternator are seated properly.
4. Check the ALT fuse in the fuse box (not sure where or even if the Fox bodies have one
5. Make sure alternator mounting bolts are tight and torqued to spec.
6. Run the engine and make sure the alternator is not making any bad noises and make sure the pulley is not slipping.

That should get you started to finding the problem.

Check out this article on the 75 to 130 amp alt swap to make sure the previous owner didn't mess it up - it's from 5.0 magazine.

Good Luck!

Steve
