you need oil because the oil helps catch some of the really small particles that the cotton filter can't get w/o it. The regular paper filters are "tight" enough to do it w/o oil, but the hi-performance one use cotton to allow more air flow.

Hey, you can't just "rinse" those filters off! You will destroy it totally. You have to buy one of the cleaning kits out there for cotton air filters such as K&N's sells. It gives you both the "solvent" to first properly clean your filter and the spray red oil to mist your filter with once it is thoroughly dry. Also, a BIG also, DO NOT OVER OIL THE FILTER! If it is at all over saturated and drips or otherwise runs, the excess filter oil will enter your intake and totally destroy your MAF and most probably your upper O2 sensors as well. This kind of air intake contamination is well documented by Ford in the form of a bulletin to all their dealer repair shops. Simply follow K&N's instructions carefully and you won't get into any trouble. Just remember, less is more when it comes to reoiling your filter. Any auto parts store that sells K&N filters will also sell their cleaning/oiling kit.

Forgot to mention that, but figured you'd figure it out since they came together. Good point.
