The son have a 03 mustang and I notice that the steering wheel move about 1/2 inch play off center before the car start to turn. He had this problem with the car from new. Ford replaced the end-links twice and rack-pinon bushings once. Now it out of warrenty. Before he get new tires I would like to correct the problem. The daughter Mustang same year has almost play of movement in the steering wheel.

Replace pitman arm. It's an easy job, you can do it yourself for under $150. Though dealer and mechanics will charge you $300 to $500.

 

What I was trying to say is I has two Mustangs in the Family 2003 models. One has this play in the steering wheel and the other has no play at all. It driving me nuts to figure out what the problem is.

Get a haynes manual or chiltons, they tell you how to replace pitman arm. Swap pitman arms between good and bad mustang. See if that helps, if it does then you know what it is that you need to buy.
