Default gas leak

Hi guys. I have a mega problem. I have a 99 3.8L Mustang. Today I noticed while driving around that I had gone 45 miles on a 1/4 tank of gas. I normally get around 90 miles. When I got out of the car, I noticed a strong gas odor. I got down and took a look at the gas tank. I haven't hit anything or run over anything. So I don't think there's a puncture anywhere. ( I could be wrong.) I have noticed a gas smell when I fill up but it goes away after driving for a few minutes. I've also noticed that there is usually a gas smell after replacing the fuel filter. It goes away after a day so I'm thinking that particular incident is just excess spilled on the parts. Has anybody had this problem before or know how to fix it? Thanks for the help ya'll.

We have had several super wind days so that accounts for all the dirt.

It's kind of hard to tell with that small picture; but it either looks like a wet spot or a cleaner area around your gas tank filler neck grommet. The next time you fill up completely, immediately look at the area surrounding where the filler neck meets the tank. The grommet rotting out is a fairly common problem with our cars.

Ok. Thanks. I'll take a look at that.
