If your catalytic converter is bad, you would have thrown a CEL.

Have you checked for any DTCs or stored DTCs?

If not, I would start there!

What are these DTC's, as well as this CEL you speak of.

check engine light and diagnostic trouble codes. If the light is on you can go to a store like autozone and borrow a code reader there to find out what code is the problem.

Check engine light is not on, and car is too old to be ran for codes at autozone....

See if you can get under the car. Check for leaks! Or dirt/mud on your cat that might be roasting.

the funny thing is when a converter goes bad its tends to be because something infront of the converter is not running in the correct perameters for the vehicle. Whether that be AFR (Air to Fuel Ratio) or something else. The converter though is a part that has no moving parts and is a proprietary type of part. To Rich or to Lean of a mixture will kill your converter without a question. Is the body or the shell of the converter changing color? and if it is what color is it?
