If AOD is build very well it may be faster but only because it can shift faster. Losses through automatic are greater than those through the manual.

To build a 4R70W takes about $150 in parts and fluid. Install 300+ HP j-mod. Shifts will be very hard and the car will feel as close to manual and clutch as it possibly can. To handle more torque pressure plates may also be added. 4R70W can easily handle 600 horse engine with very little mods, I'd say less than $500 in parts including coolers, excluding torque converter.

i found a few places that claim 800 hp..but the tranny is $2300.00 for 1300.00 they claim 550hp...plus converter ..shifter..cooler i will run a 150 shot so i was thibking a nice aod would be better abd easiser on the motor...but it has to be a aod cause i drive this thing on the freeway..so rpm need to be down low..so its the built aod or a tko600

Don't buy it, build it, since you have facilities. It's not much harder than doing a manual build. All info is freely available http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/index.html

Start with a good base though, a trans out of used ford police car is the best, years 95+. Some say those trans are same as any other, but that is until you open them up, they have modified valve bodies and pistons.

95+ will be 4R70W. It is an electronic AOD. An AOD itself it hydraulic. So if you have choices between manual and a non electronically controller auto you take away the advantage of it shifting faster, thus you're better of with manual when it comes to delivering power. But if you like auto because it's easy, then go for it.
