machining stock 351 heads?
Would it be worth it to pay a machine shop to port my stock windsor heads (off a 93 lightning, non roller setup), or would I be better off dropping the cash for a pair of bigger breathers?
Or should I just pour sand into the intake to do it myself?

The aftermarket will always have the best stuff to offer, they make sure to design their products that way. Have you considered using Cleveland heads? If you do some flow research, some Cleveland heads flow better than similar AFR offerings. The Clevor engine build is not uncommon, requires you to find a machine shop that knows how to do the swap(just drilling and filling water passages IIRC,) and there you go, get some retro muscle going on. If I do a 408 like I want, I'm probably going to go Clevor.
Both, the water ports have to match, and I believe they need different holes for head bolts? Either that or the holes in the block for the head bolts need to be tapped out bigger because C heads used bigger ones.
Go to google and look up the Clevor builds, pretty sure one of the big mustang magazines did a Clevor build, named it "Leave it to Clevor." Try googling that, they made nice power!
